Make it stand out

Instructor - Jacob Selmer

Assistant Instructor - Jim Crusse

Overall Course Fee: $200

Are you interested in taking your forging to the next level or considering buying a power hammer?  We will review the different types of machines, advantages and disadvantages, and things to look out for in used hammers.  This class is intended for experienced students with working knowledge of hand forging with a coal fire.  We will jump right into forging, without spending time on how to start and maintain the fire.

This workshop is an introduction to the power hammers and treadle hammer at the BGCM shop.  We will review the setup, maintenance, and safe use of these 3 machines: 75 pound utility hammer, 50 pound utility hammer, and 60 pound treadle hammer.

Projects will focus on gaining familiarity with the power and treadle hammers and include drawing out, tooling use, and chisel work.  Class size is limited to 4 students to maximize practice time with the tools.  Contact Jacob Selmer with questions or to review your experience before registration.  Class time 9am-5pm.

Registration Options - interested students should contact selmerironworks@gmail.com.  Payment will be directly to the Blacksmith Guild of Central Maryland.

Required Essentials - You will need to bring safety glasses, HEARING PROTECTION, lunch, and wear *non-synthetic clothing. Natural fiber long pants, short or long-sleeved shirt, closed toed shoes (preferably leather) that can get dirty are required. All other tools and equipment are provided.
